Organic Cosmetics and Skin Care
Are you tired all the time?
Have your joints started to ache?
Is your memory deteriorating?
Has your blood pressure suddenly gone up?
Is middle age spread creeping up on you?
Evidence suggests many of our medical illnesses are compounded by the continual use of chemicals and toxins. According to the Health-Report website the damage being done to our immune systems by synthetic chemicals is incredible.
Chemicals are found in virtually everything we eat and everything we use and they all have an effect on us. Just look at theGreenpeace chemical hometo see for yourselves. What is Organic?
Well, organic farming cares for the environment without relying on synthetic chemicals. Rather than using pesticides, farmers prevent pests by planting a diverse range of crops, using a rotation system and NO artificial pesticides, herbicides, hormones or growth promotants. These are all questionable for maintaining a healthy body.
The organic farmer believes the food it provides should be as Mother Nature intended and strives hard to conserve natural ecosystems.
In organic personal care products only minimal processing is permitted and only natural or traditional ingredients are allowed. There should be NO synthetic chemicals, unnatural dyes, colourings, flavourings or other additives. As the number of people concerned about toxins in our environment grows more companies are jumping on the organic bandwagon. But what does natural and organic mean when we see it on a product label and how do we know if what we are buying really is natural and organic?
Organic - "grown and cultivated without the use of chemicals" -but is it?
Do you know the difference between "Certified Organic" and "Certified Organic to Food Standards"? There's a big difference! Many products labelled “natural” and “organic”aren't always what they seem. If you see “derived from.....”(some natural substance) then a chemical process has taken place and it is no longer pure and formed by nature. It is not “natural” and therefore not necessarily safe. Just think about vodka. That's derived from potatoes but there's a big difference between the two!
Similarly, “organic” should mean grown and cultivated without the use of chemicals, but the chemistry definition means ‘a compound that contains a carbon atom’. Since carbon is found in anything that has ever lived, certain companies can get away with using synthetic chemicals and still call their products “organic”.
You should always check the labels for the ingredients and look out for the internationally recognised organic logos.
Our Skin As a result of mercury poisoning caused by my dental amalgam I have difficulty in removing chemicals from my body. Many people will have the same problem although not necessarily because of their teeth. Unfortunately we live in a chemical soup and toxins are everywhere. You probably check the labels on food to see what you are eating but what about everyday personal products like shampoo, deodorant and cosmetics? Do you just assume because they are on sale at your supermarket or drug store they are safe?
I did but not any more.
You see I discovered that government does not require cosmetics and other personal care products to be tested for safety. Further, the industry’s own safety review panel has assessed only 11 per cent of the 10,500 ingredients contained in health and beauty products available in stores today.
On the FDA's website, it states “Cosmetics and their ingredients are not required to undergo approval before they are sold. Manufacturers can use any ingredient, except for 10 prohibited substances, without government review.”
So what about the other 10,490?
Our skin is the largest eliminatory organ in the body. It is a two-way membrane. Toxins are eliminated through the skin via perspiration and absorbed through the skin, into the body's systemic circulation, through hair follicles and sebaceous glands (not through sweat glands). One square inch of skin contains 65 hairs, 100 sebaceous glands, and 650 sweat glands.
That means if you put a chemical compound on your skin your body is likely to absorb it. You’ve got a lot of hair follicles and sebaceous glands.
Low exposure for a long time for someone who doesn't remove chemicals well means they accumulate and that leads to health problems.
The bottom line is the more things you use, the more chemicals you absorb.
Cosmetic manufacturers are not supposed to claim that their products penetrate our skin. If they did (the products would then be labelled a ‘drug’ and be governed by much stricter regulations.
This is both good and bad:-
Good –your skin can be nourished from the outside with wonderful ingredients
Bad – some cosmetic manufacturers put certain things in their cosmetics that would never be allowed to be taken orally. They can still be absorbed into our system through the skin though. Fortunately, there is a company which sells Certified Organic skin care products which are 100% Synthetic Chemical Free. See their Natural Skin Care page for more information. The Environmental Working Group (EWG)which is a non-profit,research based, consumer advocacy group has developed an online safety guide with in depth information on nearly 15,000 name brand products. The electronic database it has compiled is cross-linked it with 37 toxicity or regulatory databases.
When EWG analysed their database results they found: More than one-third of all personal care products contain at least one ingredient linked to cancer.
57 percent contain“penetration enhancer” chemicals that can drive other ingredients faster and deeper into the skin to the blood vessels below.
70 percent of all products contain ingredients that may contain harmful impurities such as known carcinogens, according to FDA or industry reviews.
Impurities are legal and unrestricted for the personal care products industry. As you can see health and beauty do not always go hand in glove which is why I seek out 100% synthetic chemical and toxin free cosmetics and skin care products.
I’ve discovered a range made from purely natural organic ingredients, many of which are Certified Organic to Food Standards, so you could even eat them although that's not my recommendation. However, if you would like to find out more and think about your health as well as your beauty then visit
The ingredients used in these organic cometics and personal care productsare certified organic to food grade standards which means that their version of Organic is the one relating to being grown and cultivated without the use of chemicals.
